Blackmagic Cards... Duo2 or 4K Extreme

I have a 3D extreme card which used to work OK, but isn’t working properly after updating my motherboard/ram/CPU with a AMD 2700X

Playout using BMD media express is fine, however CasparCG isn’t outputting properly… Didikunz said it’s a very old card, so I am hoping that if I get a new card it will remedy my problem! (Win 10 & Blackmagic Decklink Quad2)

The wiki only has a supported tick next to the the BMD Duo2 - I wondered if it’s best to get this card over the 4K Extreme (if I want to future proof for 4K?)

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Hi
If you want 4k and same channels with DUO2 you can get 8k pro.

I’m more concerned with stability and card being supported for a longer amount of time.

It was suggested that my issues with casparcg and BMD 3d extreme are because it might no longer be supported… So want to avoid paying for a card and the same happening again!

When you rebuilt your machine - did you update your BMD drivers?

Have you tried it with 10.5.4?

Will have to try… rolled back to 10.8.3 (as per a few other posts) and got a BMD sync generator on a job thinking that it would remedy the issues but didn’t… will try 10.5.4 later and report back. Thanks

Same behaviour

As I said elsewhere, the 3D is a very old card, and is not made to work on newer PC’s and OS’es. So I would suggest buying a current card, like the Duo 2 or whatever best fits your demands. By the way: In your video I could not read, what the monitor displayed in the top corners.

Advice about the cards: The Duo 2 is for HD only, up to 1080p60. The 8K Pro is the same, but goes up to 2160p120 (who will ever need that?). These cards give you 4 SDI out or inputs, that can be used for two times fill & key for instance. They have no analog audio or video. So you need a embedder / deembedder for the audio. If you need analog interfaces go with the Decklink 4K Extreme 12G it gives you one fill and key up to 2160p60 and all analog audio and video interfaces. The bad thing about the Extremes is, that the reference in is on the breakout cable and not on the card itself.

I don’t think the problem here will be the card being unsupported.
I am running a Decklink SDI in my setup without issues, and I expect that will be as old if not older than the 3D.

To me that glitching looks like a memory corruption issue or something. Have you tried using the card to capture some video? It would be interesting to know if it works doing that.

If you havent already, try using the latest drivers. I could see this being a problem with driver compatability and your new motherboard

Message in top corner said 1920x1080/50i - just confirming the signal

I’ve tried new drivers, old drivers and same issue.

BMD media express outputs absolutely fine.

Hoping that a new card will remedy

With media express outputting fine that suggests that the card is fine and must be something wrong in caspar? That is very strange though. No idea what could be the problem there

It would help to know the CCG version. If you are using 2.2, a test with 2.0.7 would be good to see if this is a Decklink API issue.

Everything looks fine according to the logs. Could you test changing the decklink config to this:

<decklink>
  <device>1</device>
  <embedded-audio>true</embedded-audio>
  <latency>normal</latency>
  <buffer-depth>3</buffer-depth>
  <custom-allocator>false</custom-allocator>
</decklink>

I’m also pretty sure that I have machines with deckl. HD extreme 3D and drivers from the end of 2018 (so 10.10 ish).

Can you confirm if I should be changing the casparcg.config in the server folder or the one it creates at the top of my drive?

My original casparcg was on C:/ drive and not sure if that would create any issues?

Casparcg.exe only uses the casparcg.config file in the same folder (unless specifically invoked with a path to a file like: “casparcg.exe c:\othercaspar.config”)

CasparCG should not have created any files at all on the root of C:

Ah…maybe something up here… if I run casparcg_frontend from a new directory and it seems to create a directory in the root of whatever drive I run from… (is that a frontend thing?)

Further to this… playout is flawless via BMD 3D Extreme if I change settings to PAL.

As soon as I attempt 1080/50i it goes crazy… It crashes the server 720p50

I have an BMD Ultrastudio 4K… maybe I need to use that instead!!

This behaviour also happening in vmix… so maybe the card is on it’s last legs or could be a compatibility issue with my motherboard??

Sounds like a performance problem. If it would be a compatibility issue, it would make sense that it also happen in PAL Can you make sure, that the cards get enough PCIe lanes? I usually use the free version of SiSoftware Sandra to check that…

Thanks @didikunz - I swapped the slot and now it’s working perfectly… silly me!!

Can you confirm how many PCIe lanes I need for a single 1080i channel (with key and fill). Also, will I need more PCIe lanes for 4K stuff?

Thanks
